Rendering animation in 3ds max 2010

Hello all,

Sorry again if this seems a bit of a noob type question.

I'm trying to create small 15 to 20 second long scenes in 3ds max. I set the animation bar to use seconds and I reduce the frames per second to 20. I also use 800 x 600 size

In 1 particular scene I have 2 models, the enterprise e and the regular 1 station.. The station is slowly rotating as the enterprise slowly aproaches it. There is a starfield Environment too.

For this simple 15 seconds scene it is taking about 4 hours to render the scene.

My PC spec is:
Intel core 2 due e6600
2gb DDR2 ram
Gtx 260 graphics card
Asus p5n-d motherboard
Windows 7 ultimate 32bit (fresh install)

Just wondered if anyone has any tips or tricks on how to get smooth fast animations quickly?

Thanks in advance

Nick

Is there any way of speeding this process?

It all depends on what else is in the scene. Light calculations take up a very large amount of the processing speed. But lower light settings give you less quality. Also depends on the renderer. Are you using the default scanline renderer or the mental ray renderer? Reflection and refraction are also porcessor consuming.

It's hard to say where you can improve rendertime without looking at the scene. Try hiding parts and render single frames to see what bit's are most rendertime consuming.

Try advanced raytraced lights instead of raytraces. Or shadow map (poor shadow quality but faster render time)

Or upload your scene and send me a link.

Hello,

Thank you again Chainsaw!

I've been messing around with quite a few settings and watching lots of tutorials on Youtube.

My render times are a lot quicker now!

Thank you

I've been doing a little research and I've found some software called deadline. It's render farm software so I can create a scene and send it off to another Pc to render and output the file!!!

Have a look it's at www.thinkboxsoftware.com

Very very good bit of software!!

I now have 2 PC's in my farm that pick jobs from the repository!!

Sweet, do you need a second version of max installed on the other computer??

No, the deadline software gives you a choice of plugins for the software you're using. There's loads to choose from. I've set my farm up to do both 3ds max and after effects! I can render with all the fancy settings on and I don't have to worry about sitting waiting for hours for a 10 second scene!
